The hack could transform how we empty our storm storage tanks and reduce the risk of spills to the environment. In normal conditions flows arriving at a sewage treatment works pass into the works for treatment. During rainfall events the flows increase, however once the maximum design flow been realised, offline storm storage tanks begin to fill.
Once these storm tanks are full, they overflow to the watercourse (as allowed in the environmental permit). The tanks are emptied once the storm has subsided; this can be automatic or manual and currently the decision on when and how tanks are emptied is dependent upon simple control loops or even manual adjustments.
We need a smarter way of identifying and controlling when and at what rate storm tanks empty while at all times balancing the need to free up maximum storage capacity as quickly as possible (In case further storm flows occur), minimising the risk of spills to the environment and maintaining optimal flow rates through the treatment works.
Potential solutions are required for all types of treatment works and should explore what is possible with current levels of data but also look at new low-cost monitoring technology if appropriate.
