Our Path to Net Zero Construction, and how NWG’s Five Point Plan will deliver, through innovative procurement and design, our lowest carbon AMP8 Programme.
This sprint is taking place over four days at Newcastle Racecourse. It may be of interest to all partners working with Northumbrian Water through its capital delivery frameworks including Living Water Enterprise and the Ecosystem as well as suppliers of products and services expected to be needed to deliver low carbon solutions.
We need people with experience and ideas to help us improve our carbon performance: Thinking differently, Low carbon concrete, Low Carbon Steel, Use of diesel in construction, We are also keen to attract delegates from local authorities, education and other related industries.
As part of its commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050, Northumbrian Water has committed in its Environment Strategy to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions from new assets by 2050.
To demonstrate and progress its commitment the company has recently signed up to “The Five Client Carbon Commitments” launched by the Construction Leadership Council under its CO2nstruct Zero initiative.
The Five Client Carbon Commitments are:
- Procure for low carbon construction and provide incentives in our contracts
- Set phase out dates for fossil fuel use
- Eliminate the most carbon intensive concrete products
- Eliminate the most carbon intensive steel products
- Adopt PAS 2080, Carbon Management in Infrastructure, as a common standard
In its “Five Point Plan”, Northumbrian Water has agreed a series of dates up to 2040 by which it will achieve these commitments, the first of which is 2025. Given the large scale of Northumbrian Water’s AMP8 capital works programme, it is imperative that the network of organisations work effectively together to devise and implement innovative ways to meet this challenge and deliver the lowest carbon AMP8 Programme possible . . .
We need a detailed plan setting out how the Five Point Plan will be successfully delivered within our agreed timescales. The UK Government has made a legislative commitment to attain Net Zero emissions by 2050, and it is recognised that the construction sector must change at pace to be part of the solution.
