How might we maximise the opportunity from the scale of the AMP8 CSO programme to reduce project delivery time by 50%?

This sprint is taking place at Newcastle Racecourse 7 - 10 July
Challenge

The UK has a largely combined sewerage system, often dating back to the Victorian era.  Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) are a necessary part of this network, to release wastewater away from developed areas to prevent risk to properties.  In AMP8, UK water companies are committed to investing over £12 billion in improving storm overflows to reduce spills and improve quality in the receiving watercourses.

To meet this programme will require a change in delivery approach, standardising delivery processes and solutions to accelerate project execution whilst also embedding customer and carbon benefits.  At this early stage in the AMP, we have the opportunity to set the blueprint for efficient and effective delivery.

The question for you, is are you up for the challenge?

What will we do?

Using a ‘Year’s Work in a Week’ approach, we will develop a standard approach within Northumbrian Water for CSO delivery, including producing standard solutions for green / blue approaches, CSO chambers, and storage solutions.

How will we do it?

We will:

  • Develop and test a standard approach (e.g. a flow-chart) for quickly identifying preferred solutions for sewer overflows
  • Produce, test and revise guidance for where and how to apply green / blue options
  • Working across supply chain and operations teams to produce and prototype standard designs for overflows, storage and return systems
Target Outcomes

We are going big or going home, so, at the end of the week, our Year's Work in a Week will:

Output a set of reviewed, tested and where possible prototyped solutions for immediate application across AMP8. These solutions will include how we choose solutions, where to apply different blue/green options as well standardised designs.

Who will benefit from this sprint?

Water companies, consultants, contractors, supply chain.
